Pair of Bernardaud Limoges Porcelain Candlesticks Decoratedby Stouffer 1914-1918

About the Item

Pair of antique porcelain candlesticks was made by L. Bernardaud & Cie, Limoges, France, and decorated by Stouffer Studio, Chicago, USA. The candlesticks feature wide bands of elaborate, highly detailed encrusted gold designs including white gold or paladium trim in Art Deco style on the base and the bobeche, and monochromatic semi-matte black/green glaze on the body of the candlesticks. The candlesticks are signed with B&C France underglaze manufacturer's mark that dates to 1900-1927 and black rectangular overglaze decorator's stamp, "Stouffer's Encrusted Gold", that dates to 1914-1918. Bernardaud factory was originally established in 1863 by Rémi Delinières, and in 1895 Léonard Bernardaud became the partner of R. Delinières in the R. Delinières & Cie. Five years later the company was dissolved and replaced by the new company L. Bernardaud & Cie. In 1919 the company opened their New York office. After Léonard Bernardaud death in 1923, his two sons inherited the business; the company survived periods of turmoil in form of the Great Depression and two world wars. In 1990s the Limoges Bernardaud factory was changed into a cultural center. In 1905 Jacob Stouffer opened his first china decorating studio at 3000 Lake Park Avenue in Chicago. The Stouffer Studio operated from 1905 to 1920-25, during which time the company employed some of the best decorators in the business. A number of Stouffer artists also worked for Pickard China and Brauer Studio at one time or another. Jacob died at age 46 in 1912, and his wife Marietta became the president, followed by Finlay Drummond in 1915. Later the company relocated to several Chicago addresses as it continued in business throughout the Great Depression and World War II, and finally ceased operations in 1952.
