Pair of Ruby Lustre candlesticks. Wedgwood, circa 1925

About the Item

A pair of candlesticks, in bone china with gilt dragons to a Ruby Lustre background. Probably the best of Wedgwood's female designers, Daisy was an eccentric character, who pushed her way into a world dominated by men, and created a new style of decoration. She was fascinated by the newly developed liquid lustre glazes, and used them to create lustreware, and then Fairyland. She combined images from various sources to create her own unique style. Wedgwood was on the verge of bankruptcy at the time she started her work, and this new, exciting style suddently catapulted Wedgwood into the position of the most popular manufacturer in the country. Other companies rushed to develop their own versions, but no-one managed to come close to the design, or the quality of production. For some ten years, Daisy headed the lustreware decoration department, overseeing the workshop in which the paintresses (as they were called) turned her designs into reality. The depression saw and end to demand for high-priced decorative items, and so ended the short period of production.
