About the Item

A Garniture de Cheminée in The Egyptian Manner Constructed in Algerian onyx and ormolu, comprising a large clock and two side pieces; rising from winged claw feet, the breakfront clock case having figural ormolu relief borders; the twin train clock, striking on a bell has a circular dial with the hours delineated by Roman numerals; the movement with a Brocourt escapement, the stepped platform having a finely cast and chased figure of a seated Egyptian woman, robed, and formally dressed with the uraeus, symbol of divinity, and holding a spear, with a sphinx to the side, after the original model by Leon Pilet, and signed (1840-1916); the lidded side urns having conforming winged feet, ormolu relief panels. French, circa 1880 With the rediscovery in 1849 of onyx in Algeria, a French colony, where it had been mined in Roman times, Eugene Cornu founded the "Societe de Marbres et Onyx d' Algerie", in 1878; the company exhibited at the International Expositions, with considerable success.

A Garniture de Chemineé in the Louis XVI taste By Arnold & Lewis (late Simmons) The mantle clock, and its two matched vases, are constructed in jewelled 'Sèvres' style porcelain, hand and polychrome decorated, with gilt highlights and finely gilt bronze. A striking and most decorative French 19th century Neo-Classical st. ormolu and Rouge Griotte marble three piece garniture set signed Japy Frères. The impressive clock, which Japy Frères won a gold metal for this clock in 1855, at the center is raised by a rectangular Rouge Griotte marble base with fine bun feet and a striking wrap around Coeur de Rai and pierced palmettes bands at the mottled border. The white enameled clock face displays pierced hands and Roman hour numerals set within the mottled ormolu bezel with intricately detailed beaded and foliate designs with two charming and most unique butterflies. A beautiful maiden is seated above draped in a wonderfully executed flowing garment while breastfeeding a charming winged cherub with an anchor, a quiver, and an ewer at their side.
