About the Item

This rare early 19th-century French Empire style gilt bronze mantle clock was created by the renowned Claude Gallé for the 1807 Exhibition. Gallé is considered one of the finest bronze artists of the Louis XVI and Empire periods, and this piece showcases the grandeur and symbolism typical of Napoleonic-era design. Crafted in gilded and dark patinated bronze, with a green marble base, the clock features a rotating dial. In the marble base, there are two allegorical female figures representing Liberty. They hold a headband inscribed “L’oubli du Temps” (The Forgetting of Time), evoking the poetic relationship between time and memory. In the central part, there is a woman holding a crown in one hand, hiding with a light drapery the hours that appear in the window of the terminal, the top of which is surrounded by a double laurel branch. This model is referenced in the authoritative book La Pendule Française, 2e Partie: Du Louis XVI à nos jours by Tardy (1949), making it a highly collectible and documented work. A majestic timepiece that merges mythology, imperial aesthetics, and masterful French bronze work — ideal for collectors, scholars, and refined interiors. Take into account that the colors on the items may vary depending on the type of lighting and the type of screen from which you see the images.
