Exceptional French Gilt Bronze Mantel Clock, Henri Picard, circa 1880

About the Item

In every way a work of exquisite craftsmanship, this magnificent work of art is a complex and wonderful timepiece. The case and figures are cast by the important and highly regarded bronzier Henri Picard, active in Paris 1839 through around 1884. His firm supplied extensive furnishings to Emperor Napoleon III and an important pair of candelabra are held in the collection of the Musée du Louvre. His work is always characterized by the finest chasing and doré. The present example depicts putto resting among flowers in the field holding a garland of florals between them while flanking an oversized urn draped with acanthus overflowing with flowers and leaves over an angular Neoclassical case. Eight individual hand painted porcelain panels are set in the case, each an entirely unique work of art featuring flowers and pairs of cherubs surrounded by gilt highlights over a bright blue background. The movement is a beautiful example of precise craftsmanship, the works in excellent condition and fully operating; the back of the movement is stamped “Etarliss Ement de Paris, Miroy Freres” and the rear pallet and anchor bars are both stamped “1524”. This masterpiece is a rare and fine acquisition for the serious collector of the best of French clocks. Supreme in every regard, this is a statement piece that absolutely defines whatever setting it becomes a part of. Measurements: 7 1/4” D x 25 1/2” W x 18 3/8” H Condition Report: Light discoloration to gilding. Clock originally had six feet - one foot since lost, the remaining foot retained with the clock though it sits and presents perfectly with four legs. Tiny chip inside glass at edge of dial bezel. Dial with some discoloration. Replaced pendulum. Back door glass replaced with custom plexiglass, the door remaining ajar a few millimeters. Clock runs beautifully. This sophisticated gilt bronze mantel clock is an elegant piece of mid-19th century design, beautifully cast and gilded and set with two delicate Sèvres style porcelain panels. The clock case's finest feature is the charmingly naturalistic scene at its top, showing a full-length sculpture of a female figure sitting with a basket and two doves. They are displayed on a naturalistic, oval-shaped plinth, which is decorated all around its exterior with painstakingly intricate foliate motifs. Either side of the plinth there are two Sevres style porcelain panels, each of which shows a winged putto. One putto is shown writing, while the other is shown holding a dove. Each is set inside a turquoise blue border decorated with delicate gilt scrolls. In the centre of the plinth sits the clock dial, which is enamelled and contains Roman numerals. A fine Empire period mantel clock with bun feet raising a rectangular base with a central portrait of Bacchus flanked by exquisitely chiseled motif of swirling foliage surmounted by a figure of the goddess Ceres grasping in her lowered hand a wreath woven with foliage and berries while in her garment she collects a bountiful harvest; she rests beside the clock tower with a framed lens opening to access the white enamel dial with black Roman numerals inscribed Etn. ART DECO FIGURAL MANTEL CLOCK Anton Grath (Austrian, b. 1881) patinated and burnished bronze over marble signed "Anton Grath" and foundry marking monogrammed "HW" within an "H" to right side of base Circa 1925 Item # 203AXG01W A powerful figural clock of a partially nude male and female raising offerings of a laurel wreath and an empty vessel, they face one another before the bold architectural display of the clock flanked by coned finials. They are loosely symmetrical in garb, the burnished bronze capes flowing gently around and before them. The circular face of the clock rests on a pair of sleeping lions over a textured bronze rectangular plinth with a burnished bronze bas-relief of a young woman lying in the grasses of a setting sun raised on a variated marble base. This model was acquired formerly at the Sotheby's, New York sale on April 14th 2008, [Sale N08427, lot 155, achieved $ 5,000 USD] and the patina was enhanced at some point in the last fourteen years to include the parcel-burnished highlights in the figures.
