About the Item

A most spectacular and high quality French 19th century Louis XVI st. patinated Bronze, Rouge Royal marble and Ormolu garniture set. This most striking garniture set consists of a central clock and a pair of lidded urns. The clock is raised by six topie shaped Ormolu feet supporting a two tier Rouge Royal marble podium decorated with Ormolu plaques in the manner of Clodion, featuring Putti in a pastoral scene flanking swags of finely chased Ormolu tasseled drapery. Adorning the second tier of the podium is a pierced Ormolu rosette border below two half round marble segments displaying cornucopias overflowing with fruit and flowers. Above are exceptional and richly detailed bronze figures of a man and woman flanking the central column, based on the Day & Night sculpture by Michelangelo, currently displayed on the lid of the sarcophagus of Giuliano de Medici in Florence. The central column holds the clock face trimmed with an Ormolu beaded bevel below a raised marble Urn decorated with berried laurel garlands, faun masks, and acorn finials. The clock is flanked by a pair of lidded urns raised on four topie shaped Ormolu feet supporting a square Rouge Royal marble base decorated with a pierced rosette border below an Ormolu spiral fluted socle finished with acanthus leaf detail. The marble body of the urns is adorned with ram head handles and berried floral garlands leading to a lid decorated with an egg and dart border, and topped with an Ormolu acorn finial. A striking and most decorative French 19th century Neo-Classical st. ormolu and Rouge Griotte marble three piece garniture set signed Japy Frères. The impressive clock, which Japy Frères won a gold metal for this clock in 1855, at the center is raised by a rectangular Rouge Griotte marble base with fine bun feet and a striking wrap around Coeur de Rai and pierced palmettes bands at the mottled border.
