French Ormolu and Blue Porcelain Four Seasons Mantel Clock

About the Item

French ormolu and blue porcelain mantel clock. The blue porcelain with blue ground and decorated with baskets of flowers, fruit and doves, cherubs. A clock of the very highest quality, a beautiful example of the best of mid-19th century craftmanship. Still set on its original giltwood and gesso base. With superb original ormolu perfect deep blue porcelain. The quality of the mounts is of the very best. A cherub sits atop of the clock, playing a lyre, whilst to the centre of the clock case, are four cherubs, representing the Four seasons, with two doves between them. The white enamel dial, with roman numerals and breguet half-moon hands, is signed on the dial C.J. Klaftenberger, 157 Regent Street. Klaftenberger is recorded as working in Regent Street, London from 1863 until, circa 1885. He also worked in Paris in the late 19th century. The movement is an 8 day, steel suspension, striking the halfs and hours. The back of the movement is numbered 720, and stamped with the Marti et Cie, medaille de bronze stamp, and further stamped P.L. FRE, likely for the celebrated makers Levy Freres a Paris. Levy's cases are instantly recognizable because of the petit form of the case and figures used together with almost always the same porcelain factory.
