A lovely late George III single pad ebonized eight-day, twin fusee table clock with original verge escapement and rack striking by O. Hamley, circa 1800-1815. The moulded single pad ebonized domed top case with original carrying handle is raised on all four of its original ogee bracket feet onto a detailed base moulding. Gilt-brass sound frets adorn the sides and front in a 'fish scale' pattern backed with bright burgundy silk. The enameled white dial displays Roman numerals, minute and quarter-hour markers housed inside a gilt-brass bezel and domed glass, signed Hamley, Warwick Place, London. The 7.5" W x 11" H arched painted metal face is signed "Rich'd Parfons, London" with Roman and Arabic numerals. The brass back plate is richly engraved and inscribed "No. 54 Goswell Street" beneath an engraved compote of fruit and surrounded by scrolling leaves. The clock chimes on the hour and on the half hour with a single chiming bell. It plays one of 6 tunes, of your choice, every 3 hours on a nest of 8 bells and 8 hammers on a pinned brass cylinder. The six dance tunes are; Cottillion, Jig, Minuet, Song, Air and Dance. The case has cast brass ormolu mounts including, a large carrying handle on the top with 4 pineapple finials as well as a conforming mount on the front of the stepped top. The front door has cast brass quarter frets on the top corners, the sides and back are glazed. It is raised on scrolling, foliate feet. White of London The circular green velvet-clad base supporting three equidistantly spaced brass imitation logs, from which the clock and its mechanism are suspended; housed within a brass bezel conformingly styled as naturalistic logs, the circular etched and engraved gilt dial with elegant blued steel hands, marked at 6 o'clock "E. White, 20 Cockspur St, London", having the hours marked in Roman numerals; the tapered two-tier movement has a six wheel train with five-spoke crossings between spotted plates, the upper section fixed by blued steel screws to the backplate, enclosing a Brocot-style deadbeat escapement incorporating rubies and train to the centre wheel, the pendulum of most unusual design styled as a lidded cauldron over a simulated fire. Complete with a glass dome and key. The front plate numbered “1637.” London made, circa 1861 Thomas Cole, (1800-1864) Son of Thomas Cole Snr, a Somerset clockmaker, his history and works are fully recorded in 'Thomas Cole & Victorian Clockmaking' by John B.
