About the Item

An extraordinary work of art by America's leading maker of luxe objects for homes and businesses in the early 20th century, this large and heavy Siena marble clock by J. E. Caldwell is supported by a pair of parcel gilt bronze caryatids with Egyptian loincloths, kneeling on tasseled pillows. The marble has a rich, golden color, and the bronze is a lustrous dark brown, contrasting with the gilded skirts of the two nude male figures. The center of the clock face features an elaborate gilded bronze medallion featuring female faces and foliate motifs. The overall effect is highly impressive. The clock was originally owned by the Lorillard family, and was originally featured at their estate in Tuxedo Park, developed by Pierre Lorillard IV starting in the 1880s. The clock includes a photocopy of a description of the piece from an auction catalogue years ago. The original key is missing, and the original works have been replaced with a modern mechanism (not tested).
