Exceptional Atmos Table Clock by Jaeger-Lecoultre, circa 1940, Switzerland

About the Item

Exceptional Atmos Table Clock by Jaeger-Lecoultre, circa 1940, Switzerland Eternal table clock in chrome metal. The clock sits on a chrome metal base, covered by a wooden cube. The dial is hollow in the center with an exposed mechanism, and the circle is silver with Art Deco-style Arabic numerals. It bears the inscription 'Made in Switzerland.' Signed on the base as 'Jaeger-LeCoultre' and 'Atmos Brevets Reutter'. Jaeger-LeCoultre is a Swiss luxury watch, clock, and timepiece manufacturer. The workshop was founded in 1833 by Antoine LeCoultre in the Vallée de Joux, Switzerland. Then, in 1903, Jacques-David LeCoultre met Edmond Jaeger, a renowned Parisian watchmaker, with whom he established the Jaeger-LeCoultre brand in 1937. The Atmos clock was invented in 1928 by Jean-Léon Reutter and was produced by Jaeger-LeCoultre from 1930. Temperature variations cause the contraction and expansion of gasses within a capsule. These temperature changes are converted into mechanical energy, which powers the clock's mechanism. A mere one-degree temperature change is sufficient to power the clock for 48 hours. This technical innovation allows the Atmos clock to operate without the need for electrical power or winding, making it an everlasting timepiece. Since the 20th century, this clock has symbolized Swiss precision and French elegance. It is also affectionately known as the "Clock of Presidents" because whenever a prominent figure visited Switzerland, they were presented with an Atmos clock. For example, the Queen of England, Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle, and even John F. Kennedy owned an Atmos clock. The clock has been serviced by a professional watchmaker, it is in very good condition, with signs of wear consistent with its age, a few chips on the wooden cube ( see photographs).
