About the Item

A huge and superb bronzed metal clock by the celebrated sculptor Albert Ernst Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887). Two beautifully depicted cherubs hold the clock aloft, mounted in a bronze globe, above their heads on finger tips. Superbly modelled in bronze patinated metal. They stand on a naturalistic terrasse signed A. Carrier, on a raising fluted octagonal base of red specimen marble. The dial white enamel on copper with finely cut and blued, steel hands. The French movement is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. It has a platform escapement, no pendulum or setting up is required. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock running, please ask and we will send it to you. Albert Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, 1824 - 1887, was one of the most important sculptors of the 19th century. He studied briefly at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and debuted at the Salon of 1850 with two bronze medals. Unlike some of his contemporaries, Carrier-Belleuse had a career that expanded beyond France, between 1850-1855, he worked at Mintons, in England. Then on 1871, he worked in Brussels as well as at Sevres. His most famous assistant was Auguste Rodin, who worked alongside Carrier-Belleuse from 1864-1870. During his time in Brussels, the pair worked on Carrier-Belleuse's sculpture at the Brussels Stock Exchange. Pierre Kjellberg, Bronzes of the 19th Century. Condition of the case is excellent, the original bronze patination is in lovely condition with some very slight rubbing in places to the high spots. The marble base is in excellent condition with just a small chip to the rear and some slight nibbles to the edges. The dial is also in excellent condition with no damage. Complete with bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required. Dimensions of clock: inches: Height 28", width 10", depth 10" centimetres: Height 71 cm, width 25.5 cm, depth 25.5 cm.
