About the Item

Impressive Louis XV period cartel clock by Nicolas De Launay, first half of the 18th century. The case, with rocaille motifs of leaves and flowers, in mercury-gilt bronze, is decorated with a character from the commedia dell'arte, Pierrot, playing a mandolin. Commedia dell'arte characters are popular in eighteenth-century settings; the character of Pierrot playing the mandolin is already found in Watteau's painting "The Italian Serenade." On each side and below the pendulum, mercury-gilt brass grids are pierced with leaves and flowers. The hands are finely chiseled and gilded. Features mercury gilding in excellent condition, with matte and glossy finish. Signed on the dial and movement plate "Nicolas De Launay in Paris." Nicolas De Launay was a master watchmaker active in Paris between Louis XIV and Louis XV. One of his clocks is in the Grobet-Labadié Museum in Marseille. For his nuns and his inlay sign he often collaborated with André-Charles Boulle. Measurements H cm 74 L cm 38
