Marvelous vintage Stationmaster #611 round natural oak wall clock by Arthur Umanoff for Howard Miller clocks. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. There is a scratch in the paint on the face where the hour hand touched at some point. Look at this AWESOME modern vintage Stationmaster #611 round natural oak wall clock by Arthur Umanoff for Howard Miller Clocks!! It is comprised of a gorgeous round solid natural oak case surrounding a white dial which features black Roman numerals and a red sweep and second hand. Perfect detail!! Some of these clocks have the Howard Miller label at the bottom of the dial and others, (like ours) at the top of the dial. This is just attributed to a change in production over time. This beauty is going to look phenomenal on the wall in your study or home office, living room, dining room, bedroom, in the hall… honestly, it has a classic, timeless design, so this wall clock will look wonderful blended with ANY style, in ANY room you choose. It is a fabulous, functioning timepiece, with an excellence only the combination that iconic designer Arthur Umanoff and elite manufacturer Howard Miller can create. Alright, clock’s ticking!! Time to decide… you know you need this fabulous wall clock… tick tock, tick tock, tick tock…… Arthur Umanoff (1923-1985), a Pratt and American School of Design graduate, was a fabulous and prolific mid-century modern and modern designer during the mid-late 20th century. He began his career in 1952 at The Elton Company. His designs include a wide range of décor items as well as furniture which focused for a time on fun bars and barstools and a variety of patio pieces in wrought iron and wood and laminates. Some of the companies he designed for include Shaver Howard, Washington Woodcraft, Howard Miller, Contemporary Shells, Cavalier Corporation, and Arleigh to name just a few. His designs are widely sought after today. Howard Miller was founded in 1926 and is still family owned in it’s third generation. Starting in 1947, the Howard Miller Clock Company produced scores of modern wall clocks and table clocks designed by George Nelson Associates. At that time, Nelson was Director of Design at Herman Miller Furniture Company. They also produced Nelson's "Bubble Lighting" through the late 1970s, eventually selling the business in the early 1980s. Howard Miller Clock Company also produced other Nelson Associates products; spice cabinets, pull-down wall mounted vanities and desks, a vertical hanging vinyl strip system called "Ribbon Wall”, a complete line of fireplace tools, and other hanging lighting. One of the last series of modern clocks were the "Swing Timers", a group of at least 18 inexpensive all plastic clocks produced in the late 1960s & designed by Arthur Umanoff Associates. Umanoff also designed Plexiglas floor and wall clocks, a series of wood clocks called "Natural Classics", and "Day Timers" which were plastic wall clocks with day and dates. Nathan George Horwitt designed the "Museum Clock" in the 1970's. The final George Nelson Associates series of clocks were the 1984 post-modern "Tempo '21 Series". Grandfather clocks did not become a part of the product line until the 1960’s and they have since acquired Ridgeway, Heckman and Woodmark companies. Today, they are the world’s leading clock company and a respected brand name in fine specialty furnishings such as curio cabinets, wine & bar furnishings, custom storage cabinets, and SmartMoves adjustable height desks. Arthur Umanoff

Though much of Arthur Umanoff's furniture is marked by a no-frills simplicity common in American mid-century modern design, his work is anything but one-note. Over the course of a prolific career, Umanoff designed everything from case pieces to candleholders to magazine racks to dining chairs in iron, leather, walnut, wicker and more. With furnishings for a broad range of manufacturers throughout the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s and early ’80s, Umanoff continued a thread of sculptural elegance and textural sensitivity through his designs.

After graduating from Pratt Institute in the early 1950s, Umanoff experimented mostly with wood furniture before landing a job at Post Modern Ltd, a New York manufacturer of wrought-iron furniture. There he produced furnishings that married wrought iron with wood and plastic, creating functional pieces free of utilitarian bulkiness.

Umanoff continued his experimentation with mixed materials through a partnership with Shaver Howard, for whom he designed wine racks in combinations of iron, leather and wicker.

When Shaver Howard bought Boyeur Scott, Umanoff conceived several furniture designs for the brand, including the 1964 Granada collection, whose curlicue iron bases, visible through glass tops, stand out as some of his most ornate and decorative work. Indeed, much of Umanoff’s oeuvre is far more simplistic, like iron-and-pine armchairs for The Elton Co. or low-backed, slatted-seat barstools with slender iron legs for Raymor.

Umanoff was fluent, too, in the more sumptuous modernism of the era: In the mid-1960s, he designed the 2405 and 4449 armchairs for Madison Furniture Industries. Popular in offices, the walnut-framed, leather-upholstered seats, which could have been mistaken for the seductive Scandinavian modern seating of the era, were reportedly the jumping-off point for Captain Kirk’s iconic seat on Star Trek.

Even as he is among the mid-century modern designers you may not know, with work across such a range of styles and manufacturers (most no longer in business), Umanoff, who died in 1985, leaves a legacy that is fascinatingly diverse and at times enticingly elusive, making his work intriguing objects for collectors.
