About the Item

Stunning clock for the collectors of rare and truly stylish Gothic antiques. Gothic wall clocks are a rare find and this 19th century specimen, in our view, has the perfect size and design to use and enjoy in any Gothic (inspired) interior. All hand-crafted & hand-carved in the late 1800s this Medieval castle-like antique is elaborate, but in a stylish way and the ancient design and colors have grown a patina that truly is second to none. Not only does this antique clock has an abundance of hand-carved Gothic elements, they also are extremely detailed. That too shows that this specimen was carved and created around 1870-1880, because the earlier the piece, the better the carvings usually are. The almost square 'clock house' too makes this unique wall clock attractive and desirable. With doors that open and close easily on either side and with a removable wooden pannel on the back, it also is easy to make any adjustments to the mechanism (if necessary). The hand-painted dial face with the rich ancient colors and the Gothic dials, the Gothic church spikes, the book-panneled doors are just some of the Gothic elements that together paint the picture of this work of time telling art. Inside and attached to the base of the 'clock-house' rests the original and perfect working, bronze and brass, eight day clock mechanism. Have you also noticed the large bronze bell and hammer on the roof of this Gothic antique? This clock runs smoothly with a low-noise tic-toc, but its striking, on the whole and once on the half hours, you will not miss (if you don't like the sound of the striking bell, you can simply turn it of). Finally, even the original key for winding both the clock and striking mechanism is included. A Gothic Revival reliquary. Circa late 19th / early 20th century. Made of solid oak with fine carving. Reliquaries have been used to store relics since the Middle Ages. In sacred architecture they are often located behind the main altar in the chancel. In addition to classical, often church-like caskets, anthropomorphic, so-called "speaking" reliquaries were also made, which already inform the viewer about their contents through their own design. Mostly they were made of precious metals and decorated with rich sculptural ornaments or precious stones. One of the most famous examples of reliquaries is the Epiphany shrine of Nicholas of Verdun from the late 12th or early 13th century in Cologne Cathedral. The reliquary offered here has an architectural structure with a rectangular ground plan. The three-sided glazed box with a dormer roof rests on a plinth.
