About the Item

In 1939, Toronto-based Addison Industries Ltd., a Canadian company, was founded focussing on the production of commercial tube radios. The Model 2 “Small Addison” series, featured here, has a large ridged grille or speaker cover that covers nearly half of the top of the radio and then plunges down over the front like a waterfall terminating in a 180º arc. It was made from maroon and yellow Catalin, a form of molding resin that could be formed to produce rich tonal marble-like plastic. 1940 was the year of production for this model with 9 different color variations known to exist. Catalin is not to be confused with Bakelite although both have a similar composition. While both are often used interchangeably, they are in fact very much different in their production processes. No doubt Bakelite is still sought out by many, but it is Catalin that is more rare to find, thus making it more desirable to collectors. The condition overall of this radio is excellent with no cracks or chips. To make it work would require technical service however. There is an old original label on the face of the radio which reads: “J. R. SIROIS RADIOSERVICE. MATANE”. This could refer to either the store selling radios at the time or a repair shop. Matane is a town on the Gaspé Peninsula, on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence river at the mouth of the Matane River. DIMENSIONS: Width; 10.5 in. (26.6 cm.) Height: 6 in. (15.2 cm.) Depth: 5 in.
