About the Item

A stylish antique German majolica glazed ceramic inkwell and desk stand by Mühlen & Leendertz Issum dating from around 1880. The porcelain desk stand is of square shape standing raised on four shallow integral corner feet. The stand has a raised lower edge each molded in relief with a stylized mask and scroll patterning with beaded designs around the top edges. Corner cut outs provide the facility to rest quill pens. A central raised square tower contains the inkwell reserve. The sides are molded in deep relief with central lion masks set against a patterned ground with corner columns. A flat overlapping platform decorated in low relief with floral and chain patterning has a centrally mounted and raised round hinged brass inkwell mounted with a raised round cover molded with a lion head. The desk stand is decorated in an olive-green majolica style glazes and has printed Mühlen & Leendertz Issum marks. Provenance: acquired in the UK Art Market. In good presentable condition with a few minor glaze chips and missing its inkwell liner.
