Early and Fine Musical Automaton Necessaire with Reverse Painted Glass

About the Item

An early 19th century musical automaton necessaire box. This rare box of good size, when opened, the music plays automatically, or by activating a switch. In the box is a removable tray featuring a sewing set. On the underside of the lid, is a stunning reverse painted glass. This technique is very difficult. Behind the glass is a detailed automaton scene, featuring a train, a sailing ship, a windmill, and even a washing lady. This can also be stopped or started by a switch, these complicated boxes would have almost certainly been made for a noble lady. With the box is an original letter, showing the box was won in a raffle by a G. Mann in 1854.
