About the Item
Large round art glass paperweight features complex multicolored fused glass and controlled bubbles core, enclosed in clear glass in sommerso technique. Colorful fused glass elements are united by the choice of rather selective palette of different shades of blues, juxtaposed with bright orange and softened with white. Reflective surfaces of the air bubbles add movement and visual flow to the piece, creating a changing design as a viewer moves around the piece.
The paperweight is signed by the artist in etching on the bottom; the use of "Phil" instead of "Lorraine" indicates that the piece was made before 2014, when the artist transitioned, and dates it to late 20th or early 21st century.
Lorraine Austin is an established glass artist and Assistant Professor of Art, working in Western New York area. Ater receiving her Master of Fine Arts degree from Glass Program at College of Art and Design of Rochester Institute of Technology in 1996, Austin founded Snake Oil Glassworks in Skaneateles, NY, in 1998. In addition to designing decorative and functional pieces, the studio also works on commissions from architects and designers; Austin works had been used as awards by institutions and organizations such as Syracuse University, The Syracuse CEO, and The National Center For Transgender Equality. Austin is represented by various local galleries and fairs, including Shop One of Rochester Institute of Technology and NY Renaissance Faire in Tuxedo Park , NY.

Roman Erlikh
Roman Erlikh is a professional woodworker with over 20 years’ experience. Roman Erlikh Studio creates bespoke and limited edition contemporary furniture and art objects. His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.
