About the Item
This abstract green glass sculpture by Gio Colucci (1892–1974) is a rare expressionist piece from the 1950s. Shaped with soft and organic curves, the sculpture reveals the artist’s signature mastery of form, texture, and chromatic tension.
Executed in soft polychrome glass and mounted on a contrasting base, the artwork invites both tactile and visual exploration. It belongs to the final decades of Colucci’s prolific career, during which he embraced bold abstraction and experimented with glass as a medium of pure expression.
Colucci's artistic evolution was shaped by multiple influences. After training in architecture in Paris, he turned to painting and sculpture, exhibiting with modernist pioneers like Gleizes and Duchamp-Villon. Post-WWII, his artistic language evolved further, embracing ceramics and sculptural forms in wood, glass, and metal.
Today, Colucci’s works are held in several museum collections, including the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris.
Colucci’s journey was as eclectic as his art. Born in Florence, he trained in architecture in Paris before turning fully to painting and sculpture in the 1910s. He exhibited alongside avant-garde icons like Gleizes and Duchamp-Villon, and explored various styles—from Cubism to Expressionism and Abstract Art. During WWII, he took refuge in Provence and shifted to ceramics and sculpture, exhibiting his polychrome works at major salons and museums, including the Vallauris Museum and the Grand Palais.

Gio Colucci
Gio Colucci, also known in France as Geo Colucci, was a painter, engraver, illustrator, ceramist and sculptor. From 1921, he exhibited his engravings in various salons. He worked with French publishers specializing in the illustrated books of high bibliophilia, and he also delivered a series of remarkable prints for texts by Barbey d'Aurevilly, Pierre Loti, Guy Maupassant, Octave Mirbeau, etc. In 1956, Colucci and Gino Severini founded the School of Italian Art in Paris. A major retrospective on his work took place in New York in 1959, when he also exhibited at the Quadrennial in Rome. Colucci died in 1974.
