About the Item

A exquisite abstract modernist sculpture by noted Cuban-American sculptor Juan Nickford (1925-2001). The piece was executed as scale model prototype for a large architectural steel sculpture commissioned and installed at Lido Beach on Long Island in 1955. Fully signed by the artist on the base. This sculpture is a very early work and one of the earliest American commissions, by Juan Nickford. Nickford was born in Cuba and studied at the Havana School of Architecture before immigrating to America in 1948. Nickford was a member of the New York Sculptors Guild and held the title of Professor Emeritus of Art at City College of New York. He also taught at the University of Hartford and Smith College. His work was shown at the Whitney Museum and the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum, Fordham University and Lever House, among other venues. His work is found in the collection of the Smith College Museum of Art and the Spaeth Foundation in New York. Among his many commissions are pieces for the Socony Oil Building and the Trade Show Building in New York and the SS Santa Rosa. A gallery exhibition catalog from May 1956 at the New York City Sculpture Center, showcasing the works of Nickford and Barbara Lekberg, feature a photo of this piece done on an architectural scale in 1955 and gives the location as the Malibu Beach Club on Long Island. Information on the current whereabouts of the architectural scale sculpture are as yet unknown to us, this piece here is obviously the model for this commission. Two Nickford exhibit catalogs, including the one featuring this design, are included with purchase. The sculpture was produced using a technique of dripping bronze and likely copper to create a complex surface texture onto the frame. The piece was then soldered to a solid brass plate, which was signed by Nickford and mounted atop a black wood plinth base. This modernist sculpture is an excellent example of Nickford's skills and artistry. Sculpture stands 13" tall, 9" wide and 6" deep. A historical piece relevant to both the artistic legacy of Cuban Americans and Mid-Century Modern art and design in New York.
