About the Item

Blue Planet Sphere is a round elliptically shaped sculpture, like a flattened, angle-edged ball. Not exactly shaped like our Blue Planet, it still looks like it could be spinning through space, rotating around a sun. Or as some have said, visiting from another galaxy. Much of my inspiration comes from shapes and forms. Abstracting the familiar so the viewer can experience the work for themselves. You will find Mother Nature behind many of the shapes I use. Surface treatments are simple, often monochromatic, to keep the focus on the form itself. Blue Planet Sphere was hand built out of a solid piece of white stoneware clay. After several weeks of "setting up", it was hollowed out to create the inner volume. Again, after several weeks, the spherical lines were carved into the surface. At this point the underglazes were layered on. Dark blue and black were applied into the lines, then various blues painted onto the surface. Once again the piece is left to fully dry before the first of 2 firings. This piece is fully fired though not glazed. Signed with Artist initials within the carving at bottom.

By Helena Starcevic Ceramics
Located in New York, NY
Inspired by the viewing of the 2017 Total Eclipse of the Sun, these pieces consist of uniquely hand-formed conical shapes, like bursts or rays eminating from an interior sphere. This challenging form takes weeks to construct, many more for the multiple underglaze applications and firings required. "Starburst" sphere in natural white with blue or gray depicts the muted tones of the underglazes used. There is no...

Wood-Fired Hand Built Bowl with Shino Glaze
By Helena Starcevic Ceramics
Located in New York, NY
This small hand built ceramic bowl is truly unique, from the rustic hand formed shape to the surface treatment. It was wood-fired in an "Anagama" kiln in Upstate New York, a traditional Japanese kiln. These kilns are made of special bricks built on a slowly slanting hillside with several firing chambers. Wood must be added to the fire over several days and nights. Heat and smoke from the ash swirls through the kiln, landing almost randomly on the work. Depending on its location in the kiln and any glaze that was applied, the effects can vary widely. This piece has a traditional Shino Glaze...
