Hand Carved Marble Statue of Qilin, Chinese Mythical Beast on Rosewood Base
About the Item
This hand carved marble sculpture is a "fortuitous beast" or mythical animal known as Qinlin. A marble statue of a mythical beast, Qilin. It is not signed and so appraisers say it is not possible to know the artist, but based on this figure, would likely be from the 20th Century and of fine Chinese production. It is in overall fair condition with signs of age. The carving is covered in scales, which are represented by little triangular shapes. It measures 14 inches wide by 3 inches deep by 12.5 inches tall. It is on a rosewood base and is a fantastic acquisition from an estate sale auction in Los Angeles.
The appearance of a Qilin is always controversial, as it differs from depiction to depiction. In general, the qilin is the Chinese version of the unicorn, with a number of similar creatures including the kirin appearing in the mythology of other Asian cultures. The appearance of a qilin is supposed to bring good luck and prosperity, and you often see depictions of qilins worked into various clothing designs and works of art to convey fortune on the purchaser. Qilins are also depicted in a stylized dance known as a qilin or unicorn dance which involves feats of physical strength and dexterity on the part of the dancers. This sculpture is ready for installation.
