Robert Eickholt Large Dichroic Disc Sculpture, American Art Glass

About the Item

Vintage art glass sculpture features complex central structure of fused colored and dichroic glass with layered gold foil fragments, surrounded by controlled bubbles, encased inside a clear glass layer in sommerso technique. The piece has flattened disc shape with flowing rows of controlled bubbles emphasizing the soft, rounded outline and directing the eye towards the colorful central design element. Clear glass glows in UV light, indicating the presence of uranium in the formulation, and adding to a visually stunning presentation in UV light case, if desired. The sculpture is specifically shaped so it can be displayed either standing on its side or lying flat, allowing it to be used in various ways: standing on a shelf on eye level, or placed on a table or side board to be viewed from above. It is signed and dated by the artist in etching. Striking example of vintage American studio art glass will make a nice gift to a glass collector or a design enthusiast. Dichroic glass is a type of glass that displays multiple colors when viewed from different angles. This unique material is created by coating glass with multiple micro-layers of metallic oxides, such as titanium, chromium, and aluminum, that are applied using a vacuum deposition process which allows for precise control over the thickness and composition of each layer. The modern form of dichroic glass was developed in the mid-20th century by NASA scientists for use in space shuttles; it was called “dichroic” for its ability to reflect certain wavelengths of light while allowing others to pass through. The piece is signed and dated by the artist in etching on the bottom. Robert Eickholt (b. 1947) is a well-known glass artist who has been creating blown glass art for over 30 years. Robert founded Eickholt Glass in 1978 in Columbus, Ohio after studying glassblowing in Berkeley, California, and completing graduate classes in his craft at The Ohio State University and the Columbus College of Art and Design. His pieces have become coveted collector’s items, showcased at the Hawk Galleries in Columbus and the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York.

Henry Summa Sommerso Helix Sculpture, American Studio Art Glass
By Henry Summa
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Graphic art glass sculpture or paperweight was created with intertwining blue glass spiral coil helixes and controlled bubbles core fused in clear glass layer in sommerso technique. The sculpture has triangular shape with slightly elevated base and soft, rounded edges; the minimal shape of the piece allows the bold flow of the pattern to take the center stage. The vase is signed and dated by the artist in etching on the bottom; it is in good vintage condition with minimal, age-appropriate signs of use on the bottom. Rare, hard to find example of New Mexico studio glass would make a great gift to any studio glass or art collector. Henry Summa (1949-2008) has been working in glass since 1972. His early training in the glass arts was based on an apprenticeship at renowned Glory Hole Glassworks in New Mexico.
