About the Item

From our Decorative collection, we are pleased to offer this finely carved African Camel Sculpture. The camel is carved from dense camel thorn wood, a material valued for its durability and deep tone. Shown in a recumbent pose, the camel rests upon an oval plinth base carved with a leaf border and a checkerboard dice pattern across the top. The animal is fitted with a detailed saddle featuring four stirrups, while the surface displays fine texturing to capture the layered patination of the hide. Dating to the late 19th century, circa 1890, this sculpture reflects the skilled carving traditions associated with African decorative works of the period and remains a striking piece of sculptural art. CAMEL THORN (VACHELLIA ERIOLOBA) found in South Africa has a dark reddish brown heartwood with a yellow Sapwood and a uniform medium texture. Nicknamed for the seeds and pods that camels and giraffes eat from this tree, despite its long thorns. Camel Thorn is considered a protected tree in South Africa and therefore isn’t frequently available. It is sometimes sold as small turning squares and smaller craft blanks with high prices for an imported hardwood.
