A large and impressive late 19th century French animalier bronze group of a Pheasant surprised by a weasel, both animals heightened with original gilding and raised on a naturalistic brown patinated base with verde antico canted plinth. Signed J Moigniez.
Jules Moigniez, French, 1835-1894 ~ Moigniez studied under Comorela and made his debut at the salon in 1855, and exhibited there until 1881. Like Mene, Moigniez was particularly fashionable in Britain and many of his compositions of game birds and hunting dogs were aimed at the English and Scottish market. He won a medal at the Great Exhibition of 1862.

Jules Moigniez
Jules Moigniez was born in Senlis sur L'Oise, France in 1835 and died in Saint-Martin-du-Teire, France on May 29, 1894. The son of a metal gilder, Moigniez was a student of Paul Comolera. Moigniez debuted at the Exposition Universelle in 1855 with Pointer, Pheasant, Falcon and Weasel each in plaster. Moigniez contributed regularly to the Paris Salon from 1859–92 during which he exhibited over 30 sculptures including Pointer, Pheasant, Falcon and Weasel in bronze. Moigniez was awarded an honorable mention at the Salon and received a medal in London at the Great Exposition in 1862. Moigniez lived most of his life in Paris. During his career, Moigniez was widely popular in France, England and America. His bronzes were most decorative, particularly those of game birds. Moigniez also sculpted dogs, farm animals and equestrian groups. Moigniez's dogs reflected the "naturalism" style of Pierre Jules Mene. Moigniez’s bird sculptures were reminiscent of paintings by deHondecoeter, Casteels and Snyders. Moigniez’s sculptures of birds reflect dynamic movement as if captured through a high-speed photographic portrait. Moigniez bronzes were edited, cast, by the foundry his father opened in 1857. A wide variety of patinations, including silver plate, golden bronze and gilding were unique to these lifetime casts. After Moigniez’s death, most of his bronzes were cast by A. Gouge, who also edited most of Comolera's sculptures.

ABOUT
Paul Comolera (French, 1818 ~ 1897) Comolera was born in Paris, France. A very fine sculptor known mainly for his modelling of birds but he also produced some other animal figures as well as portrait busts. Comolera was a student of the early sculptor Francois Rude and he was the teacher of Jules Moigniez, one of the more important sculptors of the Animalier school. There is a distinct similarity in the detail, construction, form, and finish of the works of Comolera and his student Moigniez although Comolera’s birds are considered to be more in the naturalistic style as opposed to the romantic style of his pupil. The French Bronze of good scale cast with a large male Pheasant clambering upon a rocky outcrop startled by a Weasel hiding within the foliage. The Pheasant naturalistically cast with individual feathers visible, sharp claws and spurs above the foot. The Weasel sits hidden in the foliage visible from viewing the French Bronze from the side as it shocks the Pheasant. The French Bronze signed to the front left on a rock face J. Moigniez (Jules Moigniez). The bronze sculpture dates to the late 19th century belle époque period Circa 1870.
Jules Moigniez (1835-1894) was born at Senlis, Oise, just north of Paris, France on the 28 May 1835 the son of a metal gilder. Moigniez studied under Paul Comoléra (1813-1890) a specialist Animalia sculptor. It is clear that Moigniez’s career in Animalia was passed down from his tutors specialism in Animalia and in particular birds. Moigniez father bought a foundry specifically to cast his son’s sculptures. This gave Moigniez a huge advantage compared to other artist as it greatly reduced his costs during manufacturing and increased productivity keeping the process in-house.
