About the Item

Fabulous antique replica spelter detailed sculptures of the Marly rearing horse and groom original stone sculptures by Guillaume Coustou. These replica sculptures were extremely popular in the Victorian era and were done by many artists. This pair is in wonderful antique condition with no outstanding flaws we have detected. Please see photos, circa late 19th century. I knew I needed these to offer to you the moment I saw them. This lovely pair of antique Victorian highly detailed sculptures of the famed Marly rearing horse and groom sculptures are after the stone originals by Guillaume Coustou and will look amazing on your mantle, or wherever you decide. These small replica sculptures were done by many different artists in the late 19th century and were all the rage. Most were never signed but show the original signature of Coustou on the base, as do these. This handsome pair are cast in spelter, an alloy of which zinc is the main constituent, and have an exquisite age patina. They are mounted on their original black painted wood bases. Each sculpture is similar but different. The original stone Marly horse sculptures were commissioned by Louis XV of France for the trough at the entrance to the grounds of his chateau de Marly. These horses and grooms were Coustou’s last works and took him only two years to complete. The originals were moved in 1794 to the place de la Concorde and restored in 1840. However, in1984 because of damage being incurred by military parades they were moved to a courtyard in the Richelieu wing of the Louvre and replaced by marble copies made by Michel Bourbon. You can own your own little piece of French history with this incredible pair. You need to make them yours!! There he is… out in the distance standing on the cliffs edge, rearing with a colossal power that only a wild stallion exudes… Thrusting his hooves at the setting sun as if to say, “this is MY mountain, MY meadows, and MY heard.” He commands attention, he is dignified, and he is EXQUISITE. We have a marvelous cast metal bronze tone stylized rearing horse standing on a beautiful black marble base to offer to you. Attributed to C. Jere (a.k.a.) Curtis Jere which is not a single artist but is a nom-de-plume for a group of artists working for Artisan House and well known for their phenomenal jewelry, metal sculptures, and collectibles. And this abstract rearing horse is a perfect example of their remarkable pieces!! Unlike other rearing horse sculptures, this one has a single back and front leg… it appears to have been cast this way and we think he is extraordinary. This sculpture will look fabulous on your desk, coffee table, or on a shelf in any room of your home. And though it’s modern, it will be beautiful anywhere you want to add a little abstract flair. This is just the sculpture you’ve been looking for! Artisan House artists included founders Curtis Freiler and Jerry Fels and Curtis Jere is a combination of their names. Before founding Artisan House these two friends and brothers-in-law had built a costume jewelry business which sold under the names of Renoir and Matisse, two well-known names of mid-20th century costume jewelry. During the mid-20th century, the C. Jere sculptures, and metal work were distributed by Raymor, a well-known name in Mid Century collectibles, and sold at Gump’s in San Francisco and other upscale retail establishments. Pair Hollywood Regency Gilded Plaster Large Figural Lamps Boy w Jug Style Marbro
By The Marbro Lamp Company
Located in Topeka, KS
Fabulous pair of midcentury Hollywood Regency hand gilded gold plaster large scale figural lamps boy with drinking jug and original slightly tapered gold leafed or gilded drum shades in the style of Marbro Lamp Company. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. Both have been rewired with new cords and sockets. The base of one lamp has been patched, repaired, and re-gold leafed. The shades are a bit age worn with some creases, dents, & tears, but still look so fabulous on these lamps we had to leave them. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, midcentury. Just two young boys, probably best friends, or brothers, hanging out in the hot summer sun sipping on a jug of… (well, we can’t be EXACTLY sure what they’re sipping on, but we’re going with water!) Although, they are both missing one shoe so who knows? Ha-ha… Just kidding, these boys are well-behaved!! This is a fantastic pair of hand gilded plaster figural lamps of a boy drinking from a water jug in the style of Marbro. One lamp actually has “O. Art Co” carved into the base but throughout extensive research we were unable to find any information about them; however, we have seen identical lamps marked Marbro, though ours are not marked as such. Either way, they are FABULOUS!!! And as similar as they are, we have found a few slight differences and since we know they were made from a mold we think maybe they each had a different individual artist that gave them their finishing touches. If you look closely one boy has something coming from the spout of his jug and the other does not, the rocks or gravel on the ground of one base is a bit raised and the other is flatter, the drinking jug details differ, and the pant legs are slightly different. And those are just a few what we have found. And as fabulous as the lamps are, we also ADORE the original aged gold leaf slightly tapered drum shades!! They are slightly different in color as one has a bit darker hue and silver inner shade, and the other inner shade is gold. They definitely have an aged all over patina, both on the bodies of the lamps and the shades, which we think is what makes them even more wonderful! These lamps are hand gilded, and the boy alone stands at 24 inches, so they are definitely large scale! Almost like having a couple of actual toddlers around! But not really… these guys are much quieter and won’t be making a mess in whatever room you leave them! LOL! These incredible lamps certainly bear a whimsical aura, and they are ready to fill your home with joy, character, and an Ambience full of vintage Hollywood Regency awesome-ness! The Marbro Lamp Company was established in 1934, shortly after World War II by Morris Markoff and his brother Elliot in Los Angeles, California. They were one of the finest lamp producers during the mid-1900s and mainly sold in a handful of shops. Marbro lamps were one of a kind and some took up to ninety days to complete. They were occasionally made from sculptures customers would bring to the shop and others from vases and objects d’art from all over the world. They employed highly skilled wood turners and lamp shade makers. They would make occasional sculptures and decorative objects, but they were best known for their creative and high-quality table lamps. The Masco Corporation acquired Marbro Lamp Company in 1987 and their Los Angeles plant closed its doors in 1990. This perfectly imperfect pair of hand gilded figural boy lamps...

20th Century Asian Sculpture Guan Yu Chinese Warrior Hand Carved Rosewood
Located in Topeka, KS
Handsome vintage Asian Chinoiserie rosewood Guan Yu or Chinese warrior hand carved larger scale sculpture. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 20th Century. A warrior is one who sacrifices himself for the good of others. His task is to take care of the elderly, the defenseless, those who cannot provide for themselves, and above all, children- the future of humanity. This is a magnificent vintage Chinese warrior or Guan Yu sculpture comprised of stunning rosewood with intricately hand carved details and a removeable guandao (Chinese pole weapon). In Chinese culture, General Guan Yu represents loyalty and valor. People believe that by having his image in art or sculpture in their home will protect their family from harm. And while we don’t believe he is going to break out with any actual martial arts moves; his fearless presence commands the room and demands attention! You may notice that in some of the photos our warrior friend is holding his guandao upside-down, don’t judge! Even the best of warriors tend to get exhausted from a long day of defending humanity and protecting mankind. A guy can get a little turned around! Just look at his expression… he is OVER it!! His hand is even up gesturing as if to say, “Talk to the hand!” LOL!! He is handsomely dressed from head to toe in full body armor and his long beard or Fu Manchu is flowing in the breeze. He stands proud upon a rounded square base at about 24 inches tall, so he is definitely larger scale, he will be fabulous in ANY room of your home, and he is the EPITOME of Chinoiserie excellence! Don’t let this incredible hand carved rosewood Chinese warrior sculpture...

4 Mid-20th Century Asian Cast Bronze Figures on Black Wood Plaques Signed Gansu
Located in Topeka, KS
Marvelous vintage Asian plaques of cast bronze figures mounted on black painted plywood backgrounds signed Gansu, set of 4. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, each plaque background has had a fresh coat of black paint however, they still have nicks, dings, and chiggers appropriate with age. We added new hangers, and the bronze figures retain their original patinated finish. Please see photos, zoom in for details, and see long description as they are part of the condition report. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, Mid-20th Century. If you are a lover of arts and culture, we have the perfect plaques for you!! We have four marvelous cast bronze Asian figures articulating extraordinary expressions of what we believe to be visual arts, culinary arts, musical arts, and performance arts. Each cast bronze figure is mounted upon a rectangular freshly painted black plywood base plaque, each bearing differing patina or signs appropriate with age such as nicks or dings that we feel only enhance the beauty of their presence. As a matter of fact, this particular set of four was among my mother’s personal collection for many years, so it holds a special place in my heart for sure!! In our research we discovered that Gansu is a province in north-central China. Its city Jiayuguan is best known for the magnificent Great Wall. Awesome!! Each cast bronze figure exudes their own form of art, celebrating life and all of the beauty that comes with it. One holds a serving tray with a couple of glasses and a carafe… in my world there is probably a delicious red wine inside that carafe just waiting to pass through my lips!! Whatever it may be, it must be something lovely, delicious, and a bit mysterious! Another figure embraces an incredible sculpture that drapes from the tip of her shoulder, under her arm, and secretly swoops behind her. Behold… a vision of loveliness left to your imagination … a puzzling and optically pleasing piece of artistry. While another figure proudly plays a flute, twinkling their fingers across the keys… filling the air with joyful notes & sounds that tickle your ears… But let’s not leave out the last figure dancing blissfully to the beat… skipping and shuffling her bare feet in the sand. And did you notice everyone is dressed to the T’s!! Gorgeous cloaks, gowns, Hanfu, headdresses, obis, wraps, and jewels!! What a PARTY...
