About the Item

Both charming and sophisticated, this plump Art Deco fish, complete with curving, streamlined fins and chevron marks on its tail, looks as if it swam out of a scene from Walt Disney's "Fantasia." However, it was sculpted by Russell Barnett Aitken years earlier, demonstrating his skill with sculpture and his humorous view of the animal kingdom. Aitken was a remarkable figure in American life -- sportsman, outdoorsman, larger-than-life public figure, and prolific artist whose output reflects the artistic currents of the 1930s and 40s, including Art Deco/Modernism and Surrealism. While still a teen, he worked for Cowan Pottery near Cleveland, and at the tender age of 21 he went to Vienna to study with Michael Powolny and Josef Hoffmann. Later he established his studio in New York, and in 1939 created a large mural in enamel over metal, an extremely ambitious project. This sculpture comes from a group of several sculptures by Aitken that we have offered this year.
