About the Item

A Beautiful Meissen Porcelain Monkey Grouping Climbing a Tree with Gilt Highlights. A Meissen porcelain figural group depicting a family of monkeys gathered around a central tree. The group is arranged on an irregular oval base painted in green, lilac, and ochre tones to represent ground cover. At the center rises a modeled tree trunk with extended branches that provide support and structure to the composition. Four monkeys are positioned in different animated poses: one sits upright on the ground, a second reclines with its back against the base, while the third sits closely at the side. A fourth climbs on the tree above, leaning downward toward the group. The composition is designed with an interlocking arrangement of figures around the vertical axis of the tree. The subject matter portrays the monkeys interacting with fruit. Three of the monkeys each hold a red apple—the seated figure holds one, the reclining monkey stretches one forward, and another presses an apple beneath its hand, partially concealed by its posture. The monkey positioned on the tree trunk above stretches down toward the reclining figure, as if reaching to snatch the apple from its grasp. The smallest monkey, situated at the base near the reclining figure, turns outward with a steady gaze, reinforcing the impression of a family grouping. Their varied poses and positions establish a narrative of playful rivalry over the fruit. The monkeys’ bodies are painted in brown and gray washes, with pink details to define faces, ears, hands, and feet. Their fur is modeled with subtle texture under the glaze, while enamel coloring provides a glossy finish. The apples are painted in bright red enamel, contrasting with the otherwise natural palette. The tree trunk is modeled with striations and glazed in gray with touches of brown to represent bark. The base is decorated in mottled tones of violet, green, and yellow, and the border is edged with a narrow gilt band. The iconography emphasizes both natural observation and social interaction. Monkeys were frequently used in European porcelain to illustrate playful or satirical behavior. In this grouping, the focus lies on their competitive interaction with fruit, suggesting a lively struggle over possession. Unlike “singerie” figures, where monkeys appear in costume imitating humans, this piece presents the animals in natural form. Their arrangement highlights zoological study as well as narrative play, with the apples providing a central motif of contention. Details of modeling enhance the realism of the composition. The reclining monkey holds its apple forward while looking upward toward the climber. The seated figure clutches another apple in one hand while resting on its haunches. Hands and feet are carefully defined, with individual fingers and toes, and eyes are painted with dark pupils that give the impression of alert expression. The smallest monkey is depicted with a softer, rounded face, distinguishing its younger age. Gilding along the base provides a boundary to the irregular surface, reinforcing the sense of a finished display piece. The underside bears the Meissen crossed swords mark in underglaze blue, confirming its origin at the celebrated porcelain manufactory. Inventory labels identify its provenance from the collection of Rembrandt Enterprises under the title “Group of Monkeys, Meissen.” This porcelain group demonstrates the factory’s skill in creating complex multi-figure compositions, combining sculptural modeling, detailed painting, and carefully applied glazes to represent a dynamic scene of monkeys gathered around a tree with fruit.
