The sculpture is signed on edge of base: "Lemanceau" and has "France" stamped underside. Our last picture features the sculpture with a matching period painting depicting still life with that same sculpture. Measurements: 13.75 in. wide (35 cm) x 3.57 in. deep (9 cm) x 9.07 in. high (23 cm) About Charles Lemanceau (1905-1980) Specialist of animal sculptures, he is one of the most important sculptors in the French Art Deco period. He is best known for his ceramic sculptures and the use of that typical glaze with the crackled pattern. In 1923, he worked for Primavera (trademark of Le Printemps Department Store in Paris). In 1925, he exhibited in the Salon d'Automne with other great names of the period: Eugene Printz, Louis Sognot, Van Dongen, Vlaminck, Raoul Dufy, Jean Dunand, Henri Matisse, Le Corbusier, Jules Leleu, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Fernand Leger and Maurice Utrillo. During this period he works for Faienceries Saint-Clement and DIM. In 1930, he also sculpted a gazelle for "la Maîtrise", Galeries Lafayette Department Store Art Studio, antelopes in 1929 (sculpture no. 1 of the 1930s catalog of Saint-Clément earthenware) and greyhounds for Pomone, the workshop of The Bon Marché Department Store in Paris, and a cat for Manufrance in 1931. He also worked for Sainte-Radegonde during the same period.
