About the Item

A striking Italian 18th century giltwood and polychrome statue of two eagles. The statue is raised by a most decorative polychrome ground and branch like designed base. Above are two striking and richly carved eagles engaged in a battle over their perch. The birds are perched with their wings open and beaks locked with their clawed feet grasping to the branches. A single arrow is positioned between them with a fine giltwood head. Throughout history, the depiction of arrows and birds in battle has been a sought after subject matter due to their symbolism of strength, power, fidelity, and masculinity. All original gilt and patina throughout.
