About the Item

Large 19th-Century German Porcelain Pug Dog, Attributed to Dresden Description: A finely modeled and richly expressive 19th-century German porcelain figure of a pug dog, attributed to the Dresden workshops, circa 1880. Standing 11 inches high and measuring 9 inches wide by 6 inches deep, this charming sculptural piece captures the aristocratic spirit and watchful loyalty of the breed with vivid detail. The seated pug is rendered in a lifelike ochre glaze with deep black accents, highlighted by a wide-eyed expression with inset red-painted eyes that lend a striking, alert presence. Around its neck is a sky-blue porcelain collar tied in an oversized bow at the back, adorned with four applied white porcelain bells — a typical Dresden touch that reflects the Rococo revival influences popular in late 19th-century German decorative arts. The modeling is crisp, with well-defined musculature in the chest and legs, naturalistic folds around the snout and neck, and careful delineation of the paws and claws. The surface is hand-finished with a high-gloss glaze throughout. Condition: In overall excellent condition with one old and professionally reattached tail — an inconsequential repair, solid and stable, and not very visible from display angles. The base is unmarked, which is not unusual for Dresden animal figures of this period. This figure embodies both the whimsy and refinement of continental porcelain at its height and would make a captivating addition to a mantel, console, or collector’s cabinet.
