Very Late 19th or Early 20th Century Egyptian Faux Cat Mummy
Located in Hudson, NY
This object is made to resemble mummified cats worshiped as gods and ambassadors from the underworld. Made in Egypt to sell to the tourist trade but not made as an intended fake antiquity this item is a rare survivor from at least 100 years ago and has now acquired a patina and charm from age and yellowing that gives it a very haunting & spiritual presence. The head has a form that is attached to the body and wrapped then carefully articulated to show the facial features of the cat with applied stitching to accent the eyes nose and mouth. A final and pleasant touch to complete the look is the string of ancient faience...
