Pair 19th Century or Older Century Indian Carved Stone Lions on Custom Bases

About the Item

Pair of 19th Century or Older Indian Carved Stone Lions on Custom Wooden Bases 4 Pieces, Stone Lions, 2 Custom Hardwood Bases A charming and unusual pair of 19th century or older hand-carved stone lions, likely of Indian origin, each resting in a relaxed, reclining pose with expressive, wide-mouthed faces and flowing manes. These folk-style guardian lions are rendered in a dark-stained marble or schist, with a softly polished surface and worn undersides that reveal their age and hand-worked nature. The primitive yet endearing facial expressions reflect a regional carving tradition distinct from the more formal Chinese or Tibetan interpretations of guardian lions. Each lion is presented on a custom-carved hardwood base, precisely inset to fit the contours of the figure, elevating them as display objects while providing stability. These bases appear to be later additions, likely mid-20th century, and are finely crafted to complement the organic form of the sculptures. Likely created for decorative or shrine use in a domestic or regional temple setting, the pair exudes a sense of spiritual guardianship and cultural charm. Origin: India Date: 19th century or earlier Material: Stained marble or dark schist Condition: Good antique condition with wear consistent with age; one figure shows an old surface chip and natural base irregularities Dimensions (including base): Each base: 6” W x 4.5” D x 1” H Each lion: 5” W x 2.75” H x 2.5” D A rare and visually engaging pair, ideal for collectors of South Asian decorative arts, scholar’s objects, or spiritual sculpture.
