About the Item
A beautiful pair of mid century modern porcelain Chinese foo dog guardian bookends. Hand carved and glazed in a light green and yellow with hints of fuchsia and blue. The smile and expressive eyes are painted in white and hints of black. In traditional Chinese belief, depictions of the Lion Buddha are revered as guardians against malevolent forces, often serving as protective talismans for homes, and establishments. Made in China circa the 1960’s.
No obvious markings present on this piece.
In very good condition. Gentle wear consistent with age and use.
Fu Lions and dogs similar to these frequently grace the entrances of banks, corporate offices, and insurance institutions, offering an enduring sense of vigilance and auspicious strength. At this scale these pieces would make a great accent in a study or office.
