About the Item

Extremely rare, this very fine ceramic figure of a half-nude Pacific Islander or Hawaiian male figure balancing a large fish on his shoulders is gorgeously glazed in shades of ivory and nutmeg brown, supplemented by a rich, dripping green glaze. Here, used as a lamp base, the figure is mounted on a wood pedestal and stands before a rattan screen. In the 1940s and 50s, Americans became wildly enthusiastic over so-called exotic figures -- Asian, Latin American, South Pacific, most often -- which were available as decorative tabletop sculptures, sculptural reliefs for display on the wall, or lamp bases. Most were cheaply made of painted plaster, so this ceramic figure is unusually fine. The figure is 13.5" high; with the rattan element, it is 21" high. Overall lamp is 34.25 inches high.
