This is a White Marble Bust of an Italian Young Woman by John Hutchison. It depicts a 19th century Italian peasant with her distinguishing costume. She has an expressive and large pair of eyes and a Roman nose. Her wavy hair is braided at each side and adorned with a head kerchief or fazzoletto with a tassel. She is embellished by a pair of drop earrings and a two strands necklace most likely made of Coral that was typical of that time. She is wearing a pleated shirt with embroidered flowers border. The bust is supported by a very small white marble column pedestal. It is also hallmarked J.Hutchison Rome, 1863 at the back. J.Hutchison (1832- 1910) was a Scottish sculptor who studied in Rome and later on returned to Edinburgh. He was an outstanding artist who received commissions from Queen Victoria.
