About the Item

During the period of French history known as the Empire style, design reflected Napoleon’s belief that ancient civilizations (such as Greece, Rome, and Egypt) were the only societies that rivaled version of France. To please their Emperor, woodworkers and artisans began to incorporate motifs and themes inspired by these bygone nations, such as this pair of small giltwood busts. Hand-carved circa 1815, towards the end of Napoleon’s reign, the busts are reminiscent of the upper torso of some of the sphinxes seen in ancient Egypt. The women’s heads are wrapped in fabric, leaving just the crown showing with thick braids. Both busts have been mounted to more contemporary painted black stands, allowing them to be displayed on a mantel, bookshelf, or console table.
