About the Item

La Chasseresse Indienne, The Indian Huntress by Paolo Di Ferdinando Triscornia (Italian, 1856-1936) , after Charles Cumberworth white marble, signed Paolo Triscornia / F H 34 in. (86 cm) Ref. Sothebys, June 2020 Sculptor Charles Cumberworth studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under James Pradier. The son of an English officer and a French woman, he was brought up in Paris, and first presented his Chasseress indienne at the Salon of 1841. The work was reproduced in bronze, including posthumous casts by the founder Daubrée, who was a friend of Cumberworth. A cast of the model in bronze is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. (inv. no. 2003.69.1). With its tender depiction of a Native American woman and a child, at rest during the hunt, the sculpture must have appealed to the Italian genre sculptors active in Carrara. Several sculptors named Paolo Triscornia were active in Carrara's marble workshops during the 19th and early 20th century. Paolo di Ferdinando Triscornia added the 'di Ferdinando' to his name in order to distinguish himself. Related Literature S.
