About the Item

Etienne Edouard Suc was a French sculptor born in Lorient (Morbihan) on June 29, 1802. He was a student of sculptor Henri Lemaire and in turn a teacher of sculpture. Prominent among his students was Frederic Houssay, brother of the famous painter Josephine Houssay. His artistic production was mainly concentrated in Nantes, where he died on March 16, 1855. Admirable is the artist's creative ability, enabling him to receive several commissions. Dying at only 52 years old, he unfortunately did not have a chance to reach full artistic maturity and thus create more sculptures. However, he created works for important public and private places: his sculptures can be found, for example, in the Museum of Fine Arts in Rennes or the Parliament Building in Brittany. His works can be considered neoclassical. The same work presented here, dated 1836 and signed with his name, can be traced to that style, specifically the Restoration period. The subject represented is not known. However, since the artist focused his production of works in the context of northern France, it can be assumed to be a portrait of a prominent personality in that region. Undoubtedly, the quality and pleasantness of the work, which is undoubtedly of artistic but also decorative value, remains unquestioned.
