Stunning Hand Carved Art Deco Era Bust Sculpture of an Olympian w. Laurel Wreath
By Otto Poertzel 1
Located in Lisse, NL
Solid wooden bust of an Olympic champion by (professor) Otto Poertzel (1876 - 1963).
This stunning bust of a young male athlete is of museum quality and condition. Both the geometrical design of the wooden base and the fresh and energetic look and feel of this young male Olympian breath the spirit of the roaring twenties. You will hardly ever come accros a better proportioned, a more realistic or more 'soulful' bust than this wonderfully patinated athlete. It takes an incredibly skilled artisan to be able to create a piece of this quality, because it simoultaniously breathes both energy and serenity. For the mouth, nose, eyes and ears to also be of such perfection makes this antique an...

Eugene Kormendi-Frim, Head, Hand-Carved Ebonized Wood Sculpture, circa 1930s
By Ervin Kormendi-Frim
Located in New York, NY
Eugene (Jenő) Körmendi-Frim (1889–1959) was a renowned Hungarian-American sculptor, coming from a family of artists. His brother, Erwin Kormendi-Frim (1885 – 1939) was famous Hungarian painter known for his still life’s and portraits in a style developed under the influence of Cézanne. His cousin was Philip Alexius de László, (Hungarian: László Fülöp Elek, 1869 –1937), an Anglo-Hungarian painter known particularly for his portraits of royal and aristocratic personages.
Eugene (Jenő) studied at the Academy of Budapest, and then traveled to Paris to work with Auguste Rodin and Jean Paul Lorenz. In 1939, he visited America for the New York World’s Fair with his wife, Elizabeth, a painter and ceramist. During their tour, World War II broke out in Eastern Europe and they were unable to return home. Eugene found a position as sculptor-in-residence at Notre Dame University that allowed them to stay in the United States.
He created many statues while at the university, including a war memorial in Valparaiso, Indiana, and a twenty-two foot-statue depicting Christ as the “Light of the World...

Antique Alabaster & Gilt Bronze Sculpture / Bust of Christ on a Marble Base 1920
By J. Parentani
Located in Lisse, NL
Unique and antique alabaster and bronze sculpture of our Lord Jesus by G. Parentani.
This gorgeous and sizeable sculpture is signed on the back by Belgian sculptor G. Parentani who is clearly of Italian descent. With most of our antique alabaster light fixtures originating from Italy (because that is where in Europe alabaster was won), we are familiar with Italians being known for their skills when it comes to hand carving alabaster in particular. This workmanship had literally been handed down to new generations for centuries. That is one of the reasons why this antique sculpture by Parentani too has such amazing and realistic details. Especially the serene facial expression and the superbly carved beard and hair of Christ reveal that this sculpture is the work of a master carver. Mind you, all we found on the worldwide web are plaster castings of Parentani's work and this clearly is a one of a kind original. What makes this church relic extra special is the gilt bronze torso with the holy heart symbol and the perfect condition, Flemish marble base. To have found this 1920s sculpture in such remarkable condition was like the cherry on the proverbial pie, because even with the minor restauration to the nose of Christ this one of a kind antique still is one of the most remarkable bust sculptures of Christ that we have ever seen or sold. Its serene and spiritual look and feel will never go unnoticed and it makes this Christ bust...

Early 1900s Signed Alabaster Sculpture / Bust of Jesus Christ on a Marble Base
Located in Lisse, NL
Unique and antique sculpture of our Lord Jesus.
This gorgeous and practical size sculpture is signed on the back by the artist, but unfortunately we cannot 'decipher' his/her name. Thanks to its practical size this work of religious art is ideal for display at home as well. Especially the serene face and the waving hair of this hand carved holy heart sculpture are beautiful to look at. Anyone who has ever attempted to create anything out of a hard material like marble understands that this rare bust can only be the work of a skilled and seasoned artisan. To have found this circa 1920 sculpture in such remarkable condition was like the cherry on the proverbial pie. The perfectly geometrical and flat Art Deco base makes this sculpture stand very strong and stabile. Its serene and spiritual look and feel will never go unnoticed and it makes this Christ bust...
