About the Item
The following is a bio from askart:
Carl J. Pugliese was born in New York City in 1918. From a very early age he had a great interest in United States military history and weapons. He studied art at the School of Visual Arts, New York City specializing in military and historical illustration.
The four years he served in the United States Army increased his interest in the study of weapons of the past. Following his military service, he began the specialized study of Confederate arms and accoutrements, and later collected extensively in that field. His art training and dedication to the subjects that most interested him, led to several covers for the collectors journal Muzzle Blasts Magazine, as well as numerous artistic contributions to The Journal of The Company of Military Collectors & Historians. He is particularly well known to antique arms collectors for his 124 highly detailed pen and ink drawings of Confederate edged weapons which comprised the overwhelming majority of the graphics in the landmark arms collectors’ book Confederate Edged Weapons by William A. Albaugh III (1960).
Carl Pugliese was an insurance claims adjustor for many years, residing with his family in Yonkers, NY, where he passed away in 1982.

Fred Schumm Bronze Noted NJ Artist Signed, Dated 1989
Located in Palm Springs, CA
A great bronze wonderfully patinated and mounted on a slate base. It is signed Schumacher and dated 1989. We were lucky to acquire a number of this artist's works.
From a 2012 article the following provides some insight into the artist:
Gloucester TWP, Camden County College’s Marlin Gallery will present works by the late Cherry Hill sculptor Frederick Schumm in the show “Retrospective” starting March 21.
Schumm was a native of Colorado Springs, Colo., who served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. Driven by an interest in whittling and sculpture, he used G.I. Bill funds to develop his talents with study at the Colorado Institute of Fine Arts.
In the early 1960s, he developed an original method for casting small bronzes at the same time that he was designing and helping to construct a sculptural playground for the Colorado Springs Parks Department.
The playground pieces were featured in "Woman’s Day" magazine and can viewed online at you tube His bronze-casting innovations led to his receipt of a Fulbright Scholarship and two years of study in Florence, Italy.
Upon his return to the United States, Schumm lived in New York...

For this interested this from Wikipedia about the original sculpture:
The Dying Gaul, also called The Dying Galatian[2] (Italian: Galata Morente) or The Dying Gladiator, is an ancient Roman marble semi-recumbent statue now in the Capitoline Museums in Rome. It is a copy of a now lost Greek sculpture from the Hellenistic period (323–31 BC) thought to have been made in bronze.[3] The original may have been commissioned at some time between 230 and 220 BC by Attalus I of Pergamon to celebrate his victory over the Galatians, the Celtic or Gaulish people of parts of Anatolia. The original sculptor is believed to have been Epigonus, a court sculptor of the Attalid dynasty of Pergamon.
Until the 20th century, the marble statue was usually known as The Dying Gladiator, on the assumption that it depicted a wounded gladiator in a Roman amphitheatre.[4] However, in the mid-19th century it was re-identified as a Gaul or Galatian and the present name "Dying Gaul" gradually achieved popular acceptance. The identification as a "barbarian" was evidenced for the figure's neck torc, thick hair and moustache, weapons and shield carved on the floor, and a type of Gallic carnyx between his legs.[5]
Description
The white marble statue, which may originally have been painted, depicts a wounded, slumped Gaulish or Galatian Celt, shown with remarkable realism and pathos, particularly as regards the face. A bleeding sword puncture is visible in his lower right chest. The warrior is represented with characteristic Celtic hairstyle and moustache with a Celtic torc...
