About the Item

A lovely depiction of the neoclassical taste, three putti can be seen playing with a goat. The terra cotta sculpture from the 1800s has a variegated patination, with hues of dark ochre, gray, and cream. Each putto is bedecked with a ring of grapevines around their waist. One putto sits atop the long-haired goat, using a long grapevine as a rein. A second putto lays on the ground, holding the end of the rein. The last putto is feeding the goat a handful of grapes. Grapes are scattered across the textured ground, which is dotted with grass and a stemmed grape cluster tied with a crinkled ribbon. The charming and highly decorative French statue of Bacchanalian putti playing with a goat can be displayed on a center or side table, or a console. Signed on the back side of the base by the artist.

Pair of Antique Terracotta Statues, Paris, circa 1880
By Gossin Frères Manufactory
Located in Dallas, TX
This charming pair of French terracotta statues depicts a male and female musician and was made during the latter half of the 1800s. Both statues have been stamped “GOSSIN PARIS” on the back sides. The Gossin factory in Paris was led by two brothers, Etienne (died in 1900) and Louis (1846-1928). The brothers regularly showed their wares at the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, the Salon de Paris, where they would often bring home medals for outstanding quality works. They were very well known for their ornamental terra cotta fabrications which were exhibited all-over the country, where they also took home various medals. Both of these statues represent musicians siting upon rocky bases decorated with flowers, and our male musician has been depicted holding a “musette de cour”, which is a relative of the bagpipe. The female musician can be seen with a “vielle à roue” in her lap. A vielle à roue is a string instrument that produces sound when a crank is turned. The crank rotates a wheel that rubs against the strings. The sound can be compared to that of a violin. Place this elegant pair of 19th century terracotta musician statues...

Unusual 18th Century Venetian Center Piece in Carved Walnut Wood, Circa 1780
Located in Dallas, TX
Although the Rococo in France (where the style originated) lasted from roughly 1725 to 1760, other countries in Europe produced period art and furniture until the late 18th century. One such country was Italy and in particular, Venice, where this unusual carved walnut centerpiece was hand-carved, circa 1780. A large shell-form bowl with volute leaf embellishments is being held by three putti emerging from an undulating base. The wave pattern is reminiscent of a foaming sea, further indicated by the stylized dolphin tails emerging from the spray. All of the tails are textured with a lozenge-patterned background, protruding as high-relief elements. On the underside, the scalloped tips of the water swing down in three areas, forming well-disguised feet. The carvings of the centerpiece are quite exceptional, given the height and breadth of the piece. A wonderful decorative accessory for any large table, our walnut Venetian centerpiece...
