Important and Impressive Pair of 19th Century Bronze Sculptures
Located in Cesena, FC
Important pair of sculptures depicting Achello and Helena (mythological famous figures) in bronze, made with the lost-wax technique, dating from the 19th century (second half of the 1800s but made in the Empire style). Standing on a quadrangular column base in golden robes, they hold magnificent cornucopias (a symbol of prosperity and wealth). The heads are adorned with laurel wreaths. Of great aesthetic impact given both by the impressiveness of the figures and the measures (245 centimeters high) as well as the bases that support and complement the bodies, richly decorated with floral festoons and anthropomorphic friezes that stylistically recall the eclectic style typical of the second half of the 19th century. Prominent in the decorations are large acanthus leaves, feet and lion masks. This large pair...

French Terracotta Sculpture Nude Woman "Premiere Faute" - by LAMI - Art Nouveau
By Stanislas Lami
Located in Beuzevillette, FR
Female nude in terracotta. Signed "St. Lami" on the base. Stanislas Lami is a French sculptor. Stamp mark "Terracotta - R. D'ARLY Paris". This work inspires purity and delicacy. The sculpture represents a kneeling naked woman, the features are fine and pleasant. The work is neat and delicate. The position of the woman calls for calm and tranquility. Our terracotta proof is a reduction of Stanislas Lami's marble entitled "Première Faute" which earned him the second medal at the Salon of 1891. The work represents a young woman kneeling, her arms modestly covering her face with closed eyes. At the dawn of the 20th century, this elegant statuette was part of the symbolist movement and announced the Art Nouveau movement. This beautiful work was included in the second edition of the artist's catalog raisonné. Related literature: Grégoire de Thoury, Stanislas Lami (1858-1944), catalog raisonné of sculptures, Paris, 2014, model listed under number FA12. More widely known for his masterful literary work, Stanilas Lami is an artist as much as a scholarly amateur. Son of the sculptor Alphonse Lami, grandson of the neoclassical painter Bidauld, son-in-law of the art dealer Charles Sedelmeyer, he benefited all his life from an environment favorable to the promotion and commissioning of his written or sculpted works. While he wrote his famous dictionaries of sculptors of the French School throughout his career, over around forty years, he also exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes français between 1882 and 1942. Wonderful decorative piece. Beautiful dimensions. France - Art Nouveau - 1891 Stanislas Lami, born in 1858 in Paris and died in 1944, was a French sculptor and art historian. He is the grandson of landscape painter François-Xavier Bidault and the son of sculptor Alphonse Lami. Some of his works are kept in museums, especially in Spain. In Paris, at the Musée d'Orsay, there is a marble sculpture of the Danish Dog...

In 1630, aged about 20, he went to Paris to join the French Guards on the recommendation of a relative of his mother, the lord of Tréville, who also appears in Dumas' novels as his protector . It was at this time that the young Charles decided to adopt the surname d'Artagnan, that of his mother's family. The paternal branch in fact belonged to the bourgeoisie, and Charles preferred to use the surname that would have given him more prestige. Thus it was that the royal d'Artagnan did 15 years of military service until Cardinal Mazarin...

Titus Roman Emperor, Terracotta Round End, 19th Century
Located in Madrid, ES
Titus Roman Emperor, terracotta round end 19th century. Diameter 31cm. thickness 6cm. weigh 8kg. Material terracotta. Very good condition. Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasian Augustus (in Latin: Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus; in the epigraphs: IMP•T•CAESAR•VESPASIANUS•AVG•PON•M•TR•POT[1]; Rome, 30 December 39 – Aquae Cutiliae, 13 September 81, better known simply as Titus, was a Roman emperor, belonging to the Flavian dynasty, and reigned for just over two years from 79 to 81, the year of his death. Before ascending the throne, Titus was an able and esteemed general who distinguished himself for the repression of the rebellion in Judea in 70, during which the second temple in Jerusalem was destroyed. He was considered a good emperor by Tacitus and other contemporary historians; he is known for his program of public works in Rome and for his generosity in rescuing the population following two disastrous events: the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 and the fire in Rome in 80. Famous is the definition that the historian Suetonius gave of him: "Amor ac deliciae generis humani. » « Love and delight of mankind. » Titus' family, the gens Flavia, belonged to that Italian nobility which, in the first half of the first century, was gradually replacing the more ancient Roman aristocracy, weakened by the decades of civil wars fought in the first century BC. The Flavians, in fact, were not of noble origins, but they managed, within just three generations, to rise from humble origins to the honor of the imperial purple. Tito's paternal great-grandfather, Tito Flavio Petrone from Rieti, had fought as a centurion evocatus in the army of Gnaeus Pompey the Great during the civil war of 49-45 BC, fighting in the battle of Farsalo and fleeing after the defeat of the Pompeians; he was pardoned by Cesare and became tax collector...

Antique, New and Vintage Figurative Sculptures

Figurative sculpture is a modern art form in which artists create work that is typically representative of the visible world. However, sculptures that are considered to be figurative in style can definitely be inclusive of abstract elements. A wide range of antique, new and vintage figurative sculptures has been made over the years by both well-known and emerging artists, and these pieces can prove striking and provocative as part of your home decor.

Realistic representation in visual art has a very long history. And while figurative artists, whether figurative painters or sculptors, find inspiration in humans, animals and real-life objects, good figurative sculptures can make us think differently about how the real world should look. Just as figurative paintings might include Photorealistic human likenesses, they can also include elements of Surrealism and can suggest a creative and alternative reality. Figurative sculptures aren’t always realistic impressions of our world — depictions of the human form in classical Greek sculpture, for example, might emphasize beauty and physical perfection.

There are a variety of figurative sculptures on 1stDibs created by artists working in a number of styles, including Art Deco, Art Nouveau, mid-century modern and more. A large figurative sculpture can introduce an excellent focal point in a guest bedroom, while smaller works might draw the eye to spaces such as wall shelving or a bookcase that people may otherwise overlook.

When decorating your living room, dining room, home office and study areas with figurative sculptures, don’t be afraid to choose bold colors to inject brightness into neutral spaces. Texture is another factor to consider when purchasing figurative sculptures. A highly textural work of ceramics or wood will catch the eye in a sleek modern space, whereas a smooth, flat glass sculpture can offer an often much-needed contrast in a room that already has many textures.

On 1stDibs, find antique, new or vintage figurative sculpture or other kinds of sculpture for your home decor today.
