About the Item
The creator of this piece is Dahl Jensen. The Siamese dancer depicted is no doubt in the Royal Court with her elaborate headdress and elegant robe of indigo blue. The figure has a lovely animation to it as though it is about to stand and continue with an entertaining dance. There is a very delicate aspect to this porcelain from the detail of the headdress, the look on the face and the diminutive and pleasing posture of the dancer. The Siamese Dancer was originally designed during the period 1930 - 1958. It is stamped and signed “D.” It is model #1125 and is tagged with the number 9269.
Dahl-Jensen was born at Nine in Jutland, Denmark. He was the son of Anders Peter Jensen and Karen Kirstine Dahl. Born Jens Peter Jensen, in 1926 he changed his surname from Jensen to Dahl-Jensen. In 1900 he married Martha Elisabeth Bertha Haugaard (1871-1960).
The son of a cabinet maker, he was initially apprenticed to a joiner in Aalborg and won a silver medal for his exemplary work. During this period he learnt to carve in wood and became interested in sculpture. From 1894 to 1897, Dahl-Jensen studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.
From 1897 to 1917, he was a model master of the porcelain company Bing & Grondahl in Copenhagen and from 1917 to 1925 he was the artistic director of the porcelain factory Norden, also in Copenhagen.
Between 1901 and 1925 Dahl-Jensen modeled numerous small sculptures of beasts of prey in bronze that were exhibited at Charlottenborg, Malmo, Berlin, Munich and San Francisco, but he became increasingly famous for his work in porcelain, especially animal figurines for Bing & Grøndahl. He was the busiest animal sculptor of his company, some of his Art Nouveau figurines are still produced by Royal Copenhagen.
In 1925 he started his own business, Dahl-Jensen Porcelainfabrik in the Husum suburb of Copenhagen. It exported a lot, mainly to the United States and Italy. In addition to animal figures, he modeled some unusual oriental figurines with deep and strong lower glazes, from 1930 to 1958. Both Dahl-Jensen and his wife died in Copenhagen during 1960 and were buried at Bronshoj Cemetery. Their son Georg Dahl-Jensen (1901-1974) continued the production. The company closed down in 1985.

The monumental "Lynx", the snarling cat, was modeled by Royal Copenhagen artist Knud Kyhn, and created ca. 1950. It’s a monumental piece and remarkably well-preserved with an expressive snarl. The figure is marked by Royal Copenhagen Denmark as shown and numbered 2487. It is in excellent condition with no damage.
Knud Kyhn (1880-1969) was a very productive artist who throughout his life created works of art that are still valued all over the world. In Denmark, he is especially known for his many animal figurines, which he created through his many years of service at Royal Copenhagen. He worked for the Royal Porcelain Factory from 1903 - 1910, 1924 - 1932 and 1936 - 1967, interrupted only by a period of work for Herman A. Kahler in Naestved in the early 1920s and at Bing & Grondahl 1908 - 1915 and 1933 - 1935.
He was a Danish painter, draftsman and ceramic sculptor. He was the nephew of the landscape painter, Vilhelm Kahn, and was educated at the Kunstakademiet and Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler in 1904. He worked for the Royal Porcelain Factory, and a period with Herman Kahler in Naestved.
