Crafted in early 20th century Italy, this terracotta sculpture portrays the Roman god Bacchus, depicted as a youthful figure holding a cluster of grapes aloft while gazing upward. Draped around his neck is a cloth laden with more grapes, which he grasps with his other arm. Below, a feline attempts to climb a pole to reach the grape-filled sack. Resting upon a pedestal of the same material, the piece bears the signature of its makers, Dini e Cellai Signa.
Established in 1895 in Lastra a Signa in the province of Florence, Tuscany region, Dini e Cellai specialized in architectural adornments and garden statues. Their works embellish numerous public and private gardens throughout Italy, reflecting the company's enduring legacy. Despite their early closure during the onset of World War II, their contributions to the realm of sculpture endure.
