A French 19th century Ormolu and Pietra Braschia marble sculpture of Lucretia

About the Item

An impressive French 19th century Ormolu and Pietra Braschia marble sculpture of Lucretia. The sculpture is raised by a rectangular Pietra Braschia base with an handsome Coeur de Rai ormolu band. Above is Lucretia laying dying on her bed after having stabbed herself with a knife. All original and exceptional gilding throughout. The legendary rape of Roman noblewoman Lucretia by Tarquin, king of Rome, and her subsequent suicide are credited as inspiring the revolt against the Tarquin family by Lucius Junius Brutus which led to the founding of the Roman Republic. The rape of Lucretia is said to have happened in 509 BCE.
