Our marble statue in the neoclassical style by Felix-Maurice Charpentier (French, 1858-1924), entitled La Jeunesse (Youth), depicts a standing singing female gesturing with outstretched arms. 42.5 by 20 by inches tall and in good condition. Also reported to be alternatively entitled La Chanson (The Song). Félix-Maurice Charpentier studied at the École des Beaux Arts under the celebrated sculptor and professor Pierre-Jules Cavelier (1814-1896) and exhibited at the Salons from 1884 onwards, winning several medals. He was regarded as one of the outstanding sculptors of his day. His sculpture was marked by freedom of expression and beauty of form and personified 'Modern Art'. Representing a young woman awakening from slumber, this beautiful marble showcases Charpentier's exuberant treatment of the female form. One of Charpentier's most successful compositions, the original, monumental marble version of Matinado is housed in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Arras. Félix-Maurice Charpentier studied at the École des Beaux Arts under the celebrated sculptor and professor Pierre-Jules Cavelier (1814-1896) and exhibited at the Salons from 1884 onwards, winning several medals. He was regarded as one of the oustanding sculptors of his day. His sculpture was marked by freedom of expression and beauty of form and personified "Modern Art." This rare and beautiful marble, representing a shooting star, is an exemplar of his work at its finest. Charpentier studied at the École des Beaux Arts under Pierre-Jules Cavelier (1814-1896). He first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1884 and won several medals over his career. A master of the human form, he is known for his marble statues of neoclassical females, and of the emerging modern style we today refer to as Art Nouveau. Considered one of the finest figurative sculptors of his age, his popular works were also cast in bronze by E. Collin & Cie.

Our magnificent bronze, entitled Der Gladiator, depicting a Roman gladiator preparing to fight was modeled by the German artist, Heinrich Baucke (1875-1915). Mounted to a green variegated marble plinth measuring 23 by 15 inches and with an overall height of 39 inches. Signed on the base with the stamped mark of the foundry, DUSSELDORFER BRONCEGIESSEREI G.m.b.H. The artist enjoyed a prestigious career. According to the Benezit, Baucke studied under Karl Janssen at the Dusseldorf Academy of Fine Arts. In 1903 Baucke moved to Berlin and executed several commissions for Kaiser Wilhelm II including a major work at the Royal Palace in Berlin (known since the end of the monarchy in 1918 as the Berlin Palace) and supervision of the development of the Schlossplatz palace square.
