Pair of French 19th-20th Century Neoclassical Style Cast Iron Figural Torchères
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A very fine pair of French 19th-20th century neoclassical style patinated cast iron figural torchères by A. Durenne, Paris, each representing a figure of a standing young maiden, her arms raised forward while holding a a flaming urn gas light (Now electrified) with a frosted glass flame, each raised on a veined grey marble column stand, both cast-signed 'A. Durenne, Paris'. Antoine Durenne was an internationally renowned French art founder. He attended École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in 1842. Durenne purchased a small foundry in Sommevoire, near the Val d'Osne, Haute-Marne, France and established The Durenne firm, circa Paris, 1900.
Cast-iron had been in production during the 18th century but its inferior status to the more fashionable and delicate wrought iron had generally confined its use to architectural work. By the early 19th century, however, rapid developments of the Industrial Revolution combined with the simultaneous burgeoning of a new middle class provided the impetus for a dramatic Expansion in its application and in a short space of time a proliferation of iron foundries across Europe and America thrived on the production of everything from inkstands to railway stations. The use of cast-iron for garden ornament became particularly widespread at this time, as the possibilities for its mass-production at a fraction of the cost of bronze made it the material of choice for outdoor statuary...

Angola Chokwe Mask Revisited by Bomber Bax
Located in Milano, IT
Beautiful classic Chokwe mask genre that honours female founding ancestors. Such representations are particularly significant as the Chokwe trace the descent through the lines of their mothers. This is thought to be a dance mask with a net and wood hairstyle, from the Batshokwe people skilled in the art of carving and of very ancient origin belonging to the culture of the divine monarchy.
The Batshokwe sculptors were the most famous in the region, masters in geometric decorations such as the depiction of scarifications and tooth deformations, the surfaces of their works were carefully smoothed and polished.
On the forehead of the mask, the classic chinge-lyengelye scarification is clearly visible, commonly interpreted as a variant of the Portuguese cross...

Art Nouveau Pearl Mermaid Porcelain Plaque by Emile Jacob
By Emile Jacob
Located in Chicago, US
With artful and sensuous handling of material, Emile Jacob demonstrates his life-long love of learning with a technical mastery of porcelain and glazes as well as an awareness of current artistic trends such as Japonisme and l’Art Nouveau. From a bird’s-eye view perspective popularized by Japanese wood block prints circulating in Europe, Jacob immediately confronts the viewer with the sea. The variegated blues and greens take on every murky depth, every iridescence produced on a sun-filled water’s surface; while the suggestion of movement created by undulating patterns of water morphs into sand ridges caused by breaking waves as the viewer nears for a closer examination. The effect is remarkable. Upon closer scrutiny, the abstracted ridges create an affect of being even farther away from the sea, as if high in flight. The same captivating qualities are achieved by the opaque and crystalline glazes to suggest the interior of an oyster’s shell. The ultimate pearl, a female nude, is voluptuously modeled; fusing as one with her seascape, her hair spreads out in wavy tendrils and her graceful, long fingers wrap around the plaque’s edge.

Young woman with jug, Carrara marble, signed Bonnal, early 20th century
Located in NICE, FR
Charming sculpture of a young woman carrying a jug, signed by Bonnal on the back and inspired by “Rebecca at the Well” by 19th-century Italian School artist Guglielmo Pugi.
The sculpture in fine white Carrara marble, created between the end of the 19ᵉ century and the beginning of the 20ᵉ century, depicts a pensive, lascivious young woman dressed in the fashion of the turn of the century: she wears a turban from which escapes curls of hair and a bracelet characteristic of the period; the cut of her dress is also very elaborate for a simple peasant woman. The finely embroidered motifs on the dress and turban are further evidence of the sculptor's mastery.
A delicate, feminine piece that will look great in a hallway or on a dressing table, and will make a lovely gift for an aesthete woman.
Guglielmo Pugi lived in Florence, where he ran a sculpture workshop with his two sons. Their workshop, “Guglielmo Pugi e Figli”, was mainly dedicated to exports, particularly to the United States. Guglielmo Pugi's work, emblematic of the Art Nouveau style, is characterized by direct carving in alabaster and Carrara marble (often white or veined).
Some of his sculptures are now housed in Volterra's Historical Alabaster Museum. Many of his works were shown at major international exhibitions, such as the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo and the 1904 Exposition...
