Period: Mid-19th Century
Meissen Large Allegorical Group 'The Air' by M.V. Acier, Germany Around 1850
Located in Vienna, AT
Excellent Meissen porcelain group of the 19th century: Depiction of a bearded old man with angel wings, covered only with a cloth, sitting in the middle of a mountain of clouds, probably Chronos from Greek mythology, symbolizing the passage of life and reminding us that time flies, holding a long staff (usually with sickle) in his hand, surrounded by winged putti, representing activities on and with air: To the right of the old man a standing putto with waving cloth, embracing a peacock, the bird of paradise and symbol of heaven, and breathing into a tube forming a soap bubble, in the foreground wind is produced with the help of a bellows, to the left of and behind Chronos two putti with garlands of flowers and a little bird in their hands. The group is based on an earth pedestal with piled up clouds and gold rim. Designer: MICHAEL VICTOR ACIER (1736 Versailles - 1799 Dresden) Trained as a sculptor in Paris, he received a call to the porcelain factory in Meissen in 1762: he created a large number of groups in the Watteau style...

Meissen Porcelain Group 'Europe on the Bull', by J.F. Eberlein, circa 1860
Located in Vienna, AT
Excellent large meissen figurine group around 1860: Beautiful, youthful Europe, the primordial mother of the continent, with her hair tied back and adorned with flowers, sits sideways on the strong, white bull, which is actually the transformed father of the god Zeus, who kidnaps the young woman. She is covered only with a large floor-length cloth with golden stars. With her right hand she holds on to one of the animal's horns, with her left hand she grasps its neck, a flower garland adorns the animal's head, two nymphs wrapped in shawls kneel at Europe's feet and offer flowers from a basket. The group is based on an oval base with rocaille decoration heightened in gold. Design: Johann Friedrich Eberlein (1695 - 1749) From 1735 sculptor and modeller at the Meissen porcelain factory. Eberlein worked with Johann Friedrich Eberlein (1706 - 1775) - a modeller at the Meissen manufactory since 1731: Together with J. J. KÄNDLER and Johann Gottlieb Ehder, he created the swan service with more than 2,200 individual items between 1737 and 1742. Eberlein's own creations show classical deities on opulent baroque...

Pierre-Jean David d’Angers, “La Liberté”, Bronze Sculpture, 1839
Located in San Francisco, CA
A striking and uncommon 1839 cast bronze with dark patinated finish titled “La Liberté” by important and celebrated French sculptor Pierre-Jean David d’Angers (b. 1788–1856). The iconic figure of Liberty—the powerful personification of the French Republic also known as Marianne—is styled by David d’Angers after Eugène Delacroix’s famous depiction of her in his painting commemorating the July Revolution of 1830, completed that same year. A strong and proud young woman, clear eyed and solemn, she gazes into the distance with a determined resolve. Dressed in a simple, loosely draped tunic and sporting a phrygian cap, the American and later French Revolution’s symbol of freedom and the pursuit of liberty, with her hair spilling out in waves. She clutches a sheaf of laurel in her right hand, representative of the rights acquired by her people who’ve broken the yoke and chains of servitude which now lay under her feet. In her left hand is a long rifle that originally would’ve included a bayonet extending up from her fist, but which was lost decades ago judging by the dark patina on the break. An exceptionally evocative and captivating composition, with exquisite details throughout that reward closer examination. Various patriotic legends and dates are displayed about the work. On the front of the base is a verse from the Marseillaise: “Liberté, liberté chérie/ combats avec tes défenseurs”. On the square—a symbol of equality—atop the Grecian plinth are the inscriptions “Egalité-Fraternité”. The dates of the French Revolution of 1789 and the July Revolution of 1830 appear on a scroll in the right hand. Signed “P-J David” and dated “1839” in the mold on the right side of the base. Foundry mark of “Cresson Editeur” appears on the top of the base at lower left. Other matching original castings of this work can be found in Paris at the Louvre and Musée des Arts Décoratifs, in Angers at the eponymous Galerie David d’Angers, and in Washington, D.C. at the National Gallery of Art. For one to be available for acquisition outside of auction, and especially stateside, is quite uncommon. Born Pierre-Jean David in 1788, he adopted the name David d’Angers after his birthplace in western France to differentiate himself from his contemporary, painter Jacques-Louis David. His many medallions and busts brought him great acclaim and a prosperous career, with an array of extremely notable and influential contributions to French public art. In the 1830s and 1840s, David became the country’s preeminent monument maker. Of particular importance were his pedimental sculpture for the Pantheon, his marble sculpture “Wounded Philopoemen” in the Louvre (for which he also contributed to the exterior), and his equestrian monument...

Joseph-Michel-Ange Pollet born in Palermo on March 11, 1814 and died in Paris on January 1, 18711 is a French sculptor. Born in Palermo to French parents, Joseph-Michel-Ange Pollet studied sculpture in Italy with Bertel Thorwaldsen, Valerio Villareale and Pietro Tenerani. He came to Paris in 1836, then stayed in Ghent in 1838. After another stay in Italy from 1843 to 1845, he settled permanently in Paris and exhibited for the first time at the Salon of 1846. 19th Century Carved Oak Study of St. Paul the Apostle, English, circa 1860
Located in Central England, GB
This remarkable and very finely carved study of the biblical figure of St Paul, The Apostle who was originally Saul of Tarsus born BCE. Tarsus in Cilicia (now in Turkey). He died circa 62 – 64 CE in Rome, Italy. He was one of the leaders of the first generation Christians and was often considered to be the most important person after Jesus in the history of Christianity. This highly accomplished wood carving is a difficult material for detailing English oak. It shows him standing barefoot and dressed in simple robes with a sword in one hand and a scroll in the other. His face has been well captured with a good expression, detailed hair and a long beard. The small scale of this figure would indicate it was not originally church decoration...

Sculpture Scipione Tadolini the Greek Slave Second Half of the, 19th Century
By Scipione Tadolini
Located in SAINT-JEAN-CAP-FERRAT, FR
Scipione Tadolini was a skilled sculptor whose broad talent covered the neoclassic to the romantic movements. His ancestors from a dynasty of Roman sculptors exerted a profound and lasting influence on the artistic production of the Eternal City. The Greek Slave fully demonstrates his masterly talent and serves as a reminder of antique models and the orientalist influences characterising the second half of the 19th century. Scipione Tadolini graduated from the Roman Academy and worked with his father on a series of celebrated portraits and ecclesiastical sculptures for Roman churches including a bust of Cardinal Giuseppe Alberghini for the Gesù (1847) and portraits of various members of the Cini family for the Church of Sant’Andrea della Valle (1844, 1846). Tadolini is also known as the author of a number of large-scale monuments for patrons around the world including an equestrian group of Simon Bolivar for the city of Lima, Peru. One of his best known sculptures is The Greek Slave which appears in his work from the late 1850s forward. The Greek Slave was created in several sizes in two variations: with the figure’s hand either raised to her chest or to her chin. The small number of versions all indicate the sculptor’s careful attention to the human form and passion with exoticism, which can be noticed through the tumbling folds of the present figure's headdress and the finely articulated jewellery...
