Signed Modernist Surreal Bronze Sculpture of a Walking Conch Shell with Leg

About the Item

A fine, signed modernist (or surrealist) bronze sculpture. Whimsically depicting a conch shell with legs in full stride. The realistically modeled shell with a lighter ochre/brown patina and the legs with a darker chocolate brown patina. Mounted on a square marble plinth. Signed with an etched 'JP' signature to the underside of the shell. Simply a wonderful, whimsical sculpture! Date: 20th Century Overall Condition: It is in overall good, as-pictured, used estate condition. Condition Details: There is some light edge wear, some minor rubbing to the patina, and some fine & light surface scratches and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age. A superb Modernist model of a Gazelle by Walter Rotan (1912-2001) with a very dark verdigris patina. Cast at the Roman Bronze Works in the 1930s or 1940s. The bronze is stamped Roman Bronze Corp. NY to the reverse and bears an integral signature in the plinth. Rotan was an important 20th century American sculptor. A student of Albert Laessle, Rotan's work is held in public and private collections throughout the country. During his lifetime, his work was exhibited in the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Art.
